CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE

Training day arrived, and the Vessels were up and ready, full of energy and excited for what the day might bring. Every day was a valuable lesson, but this was something new. This was flying. This would be fun. Fun, and not the sort of lesson that would result in broken limbs and bruised muscles. They would be tired from the effort, naturally, but it would be mental exhaustion rather than physical, and that was a welcome change.

Bawb had done what the others had the prior evening, namely sitting quietly and focusing on intent, connecting with the minor Drookonus he had been given to work with. But he had felt the strength of a properly powerful one up close and personal in the past. The one he had stolen from Nixxa, in fact. Compared to that, this felt like a ripple in a pond versus a tidal wave thundering and raging across the sea.

Nevertheless, it would more than suffice.

Come morning he had returned the device to its holding box and headed to the courtyard, where he had been instructed he would meet his teacher. Upon his arrival, however, he saw two men standing together, and he knew both of them.

“Master Hozark? You are my teacher?”

Hozark’s lips creased into a little smile at the sight of the boy. “No, I am here for other reasons.”

“Hey, kid. Looks like you’re gonna play co-pilot today,” the other man said.

“Bud? I did not know we would have non-Ghalian instructors.”

“Yeah, well, they kinda make an exception for us,” the pilot said with a wide grin. “Ain’t that right, Hozark?”

“Clearly. Your grasp of the obvious⁠—”

“Is exceptional. I know.”

“Yes, that is what I was going to say,” Hozark joked. “Now, before you head out, you were saying?”

“It’s freaking Nixxa making a mess of things again. Confirmed by three sources.”

“She is becoming quite problematic.”

“I know. And she’s making some pretty powerful friends in the process. This all seems a bit more than her usual kind of stuff. I’m actually a little worried.”

Hozark’s expression darkened slightly. “Does she need to be dealt with?”

“No, nothing like that. But your people should really keep an eye on her.”

“We already are, but I will relay your information and have our agents watch her with greater focus.”

“Good. Let’s hope she doesn’t do anything stupid. We don’t want to get into that sort of mess.”

“Do not worry, my friend. We will keep her in check.”

“That would be pretty ideal. You know our history, and Henni and I don’t really want to get into a fight with her if we can avoid it.”

“Excuse me,” Bawb said. “But I’ve also met her⁠—”

“Yeah, we know, kid.”

“Yes, well, from all everyone has said about her, yourself included, she’s protected by some fairly powerful casters on her team. With that degree of magic on her side, it does not seem you and Henni would want to get into an altercation if it could be avoided.”

Bud burst out laughing at that.

“What did I say?” Bawb asked, perplexed.

Hozark’s eyes crinkled slightly with amusement.
